Anosmia
11 min read
Also known as: anosmia · loss of smell · inability to smell · lost sense of smell · olfactory disorder · no smell · olfactory failure · hyposmia · smell gone
Your Body Is Speaking
You breathe in — and nothing comes. No coffee in the morning, no rain on warm asphalt, no scent of the person you love. The world is still there, but it has lost its depth. And with it, taste: because what we experience as taste is eighty percent smell. Whoever cannot smell still eats — but the food no longer has a soul. An apple tastes like structure, not like apple. A wine tastes like alcohol, not like landscape.
Medicine knows many causes: infections that attack the olfactory mucosa. Post-COVID syndromes that disturb the olfactory nerve. Polyps, allergies, head injuries, rarer neurological conditions. All of that is real. All of it deserves medical clarification. And yet a question remains open when the medical search reaches its limits: Why now? Why this sense? Why precisely the oldest, most archaic, most immediate of all?
