Agnosia

Your eyes see. Your ears hear. Your fingers feel. But somewhere on the path between perception and recognition, something is lost. You see a face — and it remains a face, not your sister's. You hear a voice — and it remains a sound, not the language you have spoken for decades. You hold a key in your hand — and the shape remains unfamiliar, even though you've used it a thousand times.

Medicine calls this agnosia and locates the cause primarily in damage to specific brain regions — after a stroke, an accident, a neurological illness. This explanation is correct, and it is important. But it describes only the how, not the what. It explains the mechanics of not-recognising. It does not answer the question that waits beneath the mechanics: what does it mean that precisely the capacity to recognise is giving out?
